ELECTORAL LITERACY CLUB

College has set up Electoral Literacy Club in 2018. It has been set up to promote electoral literacy among the students through engaging and interesting activities. It aims to give hands on experience to students in an apolitical, neutral and non-partisan manner. It will target the students above 18 years of age.

 

Objectives:-

  • To educate students about voter registration, electoral process and related matters through hands on experience.
  • To familiarize students to EVM and VVPAT machines
  • To make students understand the value of their vote and exercise their suffrage right in a confident, comfortable and ethical manner.
  • To harness the potential of ELC members for carrying out the electoral literacy in communities.
  • To facilitate voter registration for its eligible members who are yet to be registered.
  • To develop a culture of electoral participation and maximize the informed and ethical voting

Membership:

All the students of the college are its members. One can become a member by registering herself/himself at the beginning of the academic year. After registration, one is recognized as a member till the completion of her/his graduation course. The club is run by an elected body from amongst the ELC member students with elected representatives from each of the classes.

Structure:

One teacher by name Dr Gokul Mundhe from the Political Science Department of the college acts as the Nodal Officer for the ELC. He also acts as a Mentor for the ELC.

Nodal Officer is entrusted with following duties:

  • Promoting and supervising Club enrollment.
  • Supervising the election and formation of the Executive Committee of ELC.
  • Coordinating between the District Election Officer and the ELC for exchange of resources, information etc.
  • Attempt generating new resources and forward the same to the District Election Officer.
  • Guiding and supervising the development of the calendar of activities for the year by the Executive Council

Initiatives undertaken by the ELC:

  • ELC organizes camps to register the names of new voters.
  • Organized street plays and rallies to develop awareness about voting among voters.
  • Organized online lecture on National Voting Day during Covid-19.
  • In the general election of Legislative Assembly and Parliament held in the year 2019, theELC members helped the disabled and senior citizens to cast their votes.
  • All teaching and non-teaching staff of the college participated in the voting process to assist the administration.
  • A workshop called 'Mock Parliament' was organized in the college.
  • The importance of ethical voting is conveyed through special lectures on Constitution Day.

The ELC fosters democratic values by posting relevant content such as event announcements, updates, results, current affairs, online/offline content, registration drives etc. on social media. It functions as catalyst in a democratic process. The ELC club identifies the students who have attained 18 years of age every year. It helps such students register as voters.
